Party People

Traditional parties with games and jellies are great, but a change can be fun too. We have researched some excellent alternatives, some at a venue, some which come to your venue. We have divided them into themes – arts, dance etc, birds and beasts, trains, sea craft and creatures, out in the country, soft play fun, magic, and something completely new! Book in advance and please let party people know that you heard about them from Blackbird Pie.

Arts and Crafts, Drama and Dance:

Becky Biddles in Falmouth is a seriously cool place to hold a party . Looks like a café, but inside is the best excuse to go wild on a blank plate since Nigella Lawson. Paint your own ceramics parties for all ages. The dynamic objects of desire in their logo refer to the gorgeously kitsch items they sell in the shop. 01326 212333

Dish-n-doodle, The Ceramic Painting Studio , St. Dominic St. Truro , 01872 273095. Friendly and inspiring ceramic painting parties for all ages, up to 24 people. Choose a mug/plate/bowl and decorate with brushes and Bumpy Doodles patterns using non-stain paint. Balloons and drinks provided (bring your own food – small charge for use of crockery etc)

Local artist Nik Elvy runs highly recommended, themed Craft parties for all ages, across Cornwall . The package includes making 2 items each, party bags and face painting. 01726 821696

Birds and Beasts:

Ian Clayton’s Animal Experience comes to you with a menagerie of tree frogs, owls, rats, millipedes etc and is just great. 01326 341118

At Paradise Park , Hayle you can feed the penguins, explore the Park and its exotic inhabitants, and then eat at the birthday themed café. Book on 01872 264112. From mid May they will have a brilliant new indoor play barn with themed Jungle party rooms.

Trains:

Lappa Valley Railway takes you on a magical journey on a miniature steam train to an enchanted valley. Perfect for picnics, boating and riding different trains. Book train tickets on 01872 540317

With Bodmin and Wenford Railway you can hire a carriage, eat at the café and soak in the steam filled atmosphere, 0845 1259678.

Sea Craft and Creatures:

At Lusty Glaze’s beautiful golden beach and cove, (Newquay), the Adventure Centre’s “Baywatch Babes” parties (3 to 6 yrs) and “Junior Baywatch” (7 to 14 yrs), encourage an understanding and enjoyment of the coast as well as of its potential dangers (basic qualified life saving instruction inc). 01637 872444 or 878718

Many Leisure Centres have excellent swimming party packages. We particularly recommend Carn Brea in Poole 01209 714766, Polkyth , St Austell 01726 223696 and St Ives 01736 797006.

The St Michael’s Hotel , Falmouth hosts parties in a delightfully decorated room (with food so scrummy our five year old gives up party games for it!) and swimming in their newly refurbished pool. Why not get some gentle exercise yourself? 01326 312707

Outside Fun:

Carnglaze Caverns , St Neot, Liskeard, is a magical place for birthday parties. Picnic in glades populated with delicate faeries, enjoy tailor-made tales while wand erin g the bluebell woods or go on a bear hunt! Parties for all ages, 01579 320251.

Trebah Gardens , Mawnan Smith: Follow a trail through the lovely gardens past vast plants and a lake full of fish to the sea, and then have a party tea in their excellent café. In the play area there is a fort in a magical tree.  01326 250448.

Colliford Lake Park on Bodmin Moor has acres of gorgeous countryside, a huge lake and watersports, a fab new indoor play kingdom and the new Gourmet’s Choice Café - mmmmm.

Soft Play fun: the following venues have exciting, well managed facilities: Colliford Lake Park ; Ben’s Playworld , Par 01726 815553; and DairyLand Farm World , near Newquay, 01872 510349 (very good value themed parties). Crazy Castles and Fit’n’Fun bring soft play equipment to you.

Fit’n’Fun Kids have loads of experience. Parties range from soft play to a series of themes, 01326 379428.

Bedruthan Steps Hotel , Mawgan Porth , 01637 860555 offer traditional and themed parties (e.g. Teddy Bears Picnic, Commandos) for aged 3+. The children can play on the wonderful outside assault course, in the extensive grounds and in the Jungle Tumble soft play room. You can relax and enjoy their beautiful views of the ocean.

Magic:

Larry Parker’s Absolute Magic ! Larry is an experienced magician and puppeteer with his own original material suitable for 3 to 9 year olds. A member of the prestigious Inner Magic Circle , he wrote for children's television and his rabbit puppet appeared on BBC and ITV. 01736 364120

Something completely different!

Transport children to the world of imaginative play. Hire or buy a tipi from Wigwam Sam, supplier to the latest Harry Potter movie ‘Harry Potter & 'The Goblet of Fire’.
